5 Ways to Explain Why You’re Looking for a New Job When You Already Have One

Hi there,

During job interviews, interviewers ask you a variety of questions, some of which are familiar to you while others not really so.

“Why are you looking for a new job when you already have one?” is one of those questions.

You are immediately put under pressure to justify why you are looking for a new job.

The best course of action is to respond truthfully.

You should never disparage your previous boss or company.

Here are five quick fixes to help you!

1. You’re bored with your job because it no longer challenges you.

People no longer work for the same company for their entire careers. However, unless your position has changed, you may be dissatisfied with your job.

It is acceptable to state that, while you have enjoyed working for the company and have learned a lot, you believe you have learned everything you can and are looking for a job with new challenges where you can put your skills and experience to better use.

2. Describe the problems you intend to solve.

While explaining why you want a new job is a good starting point, don’t stop there. Take it a step further and explain how you’re a problem solver and how you’d like to solve problems for the company to advance your career.

For example, you could identify potential pain points that the organization may be experiencing and then explain how you intend to address them using your new ideas, experience, and knowledge. Then, for the remainder of your response, explain why this new job better aligns with your career goals and where you want your career path to go in the future.

3. You’re Changing Jobs

One of the simplest reasons to leave your current job is that your career interests have changed. It’s a sign that you understand what works and what doesn’t — literally.

So, if you’re applying for a new job in a different field than your previous one, inform your interviewer that you’re changing careers and that working for this company would be in line with your new career goals. Then, explain all of your transferable skills and experience to demonstrate your suitability for the position.

4. It is the following logical step.

Sometimes you’ve gone as far as you can in your current company’s career, but you want to go even further. It could be because the company is small and there are no opportunities for advancement. It’s also possible that your current company has a narrow focus, and you’ve decided you’d like to work on broader or larger projects.

Explain how the new role at the new company will help you advance your career while also mentioning how your current skill set will benefit the employer.

5. Inform them that this is your dream company.

Employers aren’t looking for just anyone to fill open positions. They are looking for candidates who are passionate about working for their company. Make your answer about the hiring manager’s company rather than your current employer. Explain how you support their humanitarian efforts and connect with their company culture.

These can demonstrate to a potential employer that you have not only researched the company, but that you will fit in well and will not leave after six months.

Here’s Why

Explaining why you’re looking for a new job when you already have one is a balancing act. Focusing your answer on what you can offer the company and why it’s the right career move for you can help you impress the hiring manager.
